Recent Findings
The famous doctor that helped make ionized water so popular in the early 1980's (Dr. Hidemitsu Hayashi) continued his research and later determined conclusively that the astounding health benefits of ionized water observed in clinical studies were a result of hydrogen gas (H2) in the freshly created water.
ORP and alkalinity (or pH) are only contributing factors!
More troubling to him was that the 'home' versions of these water ionizers typically create water so slowly that all the hydrogen gas has evaporated before enough water has been created to drink!
Molecular hydrogen (H2) interacts with hydrogenase enzymes in the body to produce atomic or active hydrogen. Active hydrogen is the most effective antioxidant and free radical scavenger known. ORP
When looking to purchase a water ionizer, you will find endless references to ORP (Oxidation Reduction Potential). ORP is measured in millivolts (mV) and represents the potential for an electrical reduction of oxidants. For the purveyors of ionized water its always ORP, how negative is the ORP?
This focus on ORP is justified as it is the most healthful aspect of ionized water. Water ionizers usually produce water that measures between negative 300-600 mV or thereabouts. You may be wondering what is responsible for this ORP that is so healthful? The answer is the negative ion of hydrogen, H-.
Is H- created by the stick? Yes, but not directly. The stick creates molecular hydrogen, H2, a gas that is broken down by the body into two H- ions. When testing the stick, we measure a negative ORP between 50-250 mV, but this is merely a result of some H2 breaking down in the water. This means that the total antioxidant effect is actually several times greater than what is measured by the ORP meter.
If you are expecting to bottle ionized water and take it with you wherever you go, you should remember that the beneficial ORP begins to decay immediately after the water has been produced, as mentioned previously.
Most water you will be drinking throughout the day when you are not standing in front of the kitchen counter next to a water ionizer will have an ORP between positive 300-600 mV. This means the water, however pure, is actually an oxidant.
In terms of antioxidant potential then, how does the stick compare to a water ionizer? It outperforms them.
Typical Usage MattersAs opposed to drinking -600mV water two to three times a day and +450mV the rest of the day, you are drinking -50 to -250mV all day long! And, that is only the H- measurement. There is an even greater antioxidant boost from the H2 which isn't reflected in the ORP measurement!
pH
pH is the measure of acid-alkaline balance of a substance. A pH of seven is considered neutral, while anything below seven is progressively more acidic and above seven, more alkaline. One's internal pH balance is managed automatically by the body, provided it has the resources to do so. The problem is that our modern lifestyle and diet cause the body to deplete its pH management reserves leaving many overly acidic.
Research has shown that most diseases can only form in acidic conditions!
Alkaline water can assist the body in dealing with these acidic conditions.
For the purposes of this discussion it is important to note that alkaline water can be either natural or artificial, because the body prefers the natural variety- big surprise, huh? Water ionizers create an artificial pH which quickly decays after consumption and leaves nothing for the body to store for later use. In fact, this artificial alkalinity must be used or neutralized by the body immediately after drinking. This is because the alkalinity was created artificially with electricity and not naturally with minerals.
A natural pH is a perfect reflection of the minerals in the water. The best acid-buffering or alkaline minerals are calcium and magnesium. When the body consumes these minerals it can build reserves to fight acidity when the need arises. Artificial alkalinity must be used at once or neutralized if it isn't needed.
All water found in nature has a pH that perfectly corresponds to its mineral content. What does this mean? Water from ionizer machines is far from natural. In fact, it is this artificial alkalinity that causes side effects after prolonged consumption.
The most common side effects reported are erratic heart behavior, hypertension, nervousness/anxiety, urinary tract and bladder infections, and stabbing side pains.
Additionally, more severe side effects were observed in a clinical study involving rats. The study revealed injury to cardiac tissue (heart muscle) as a result of drinking ionized water. In an age when heart disease is a leading killer, ionized water is simply not a smart choice.

Redox Reaction
In junior high school chemistry we learned that the redox reaction or oxidation-reduction is the most universal, fundamental, as well as, most important of all. The problem of life and death as well as health and sickness could, therefore, be explained and demonstrated by the concept of redox reaction. We can recap these concepts with a following analogy. Copper (Cu) loses its glitter by oxidation and is restored by reduction. In quite the same way, a cell unit (call it Cu) is damaged (made sick) by oxidation and is restored (cured) by reduction resulting in the production of H2O.
Stage 1: Oxidation of Cell unit

Water, the prerequisite for every life form
Water or H2O is the very product of redox reaction, i.e., a product of reduction by Hydrogen and oxidation by Oxygen. Therefore, it is only natural to say that every life form, born in H2O should be under the influence of redox reaction. In short, oxidation brings it sickness and reduction restores it to health again. It is quite clear from the evolutionary record that life forms could have developed in water, because it was an environment which provided them with all the necessary conditions for birth and survival.
Active Oxygen
Active oxygen species are considered to inactivate enzymes in the cells, damage DNA and destroy lipid membrane which should cause every disease, aging as well as cancer as far as the most recent medical research is concerned. Active Hydrogen
Then what is the most ideal countermeasure against active oxygen? It should be nothing but 'active hydrogen' as far as the logic is concerned. Active hydrogen or atomic hydrogen is known to have strong reducing potential. It is only natural to say that active oxygen species can be reduced or scavenged to produce O2-, H2O2 and HOE one after another to produce H2O as a result, as shown in the following.

- H2O2 + e- → HOE + HO-
- HOE + HE → H2O
- HO- + H+ → H2O
(HE & HOE refer to hydrogenase enzyme chemical activity)
Hydrogen Poor Water
According to my concept, water can be classified into two kinds, i.e., hydrogen poor and hydrogen rich water. Natural water or 99.9% of water found on the earth can be defined to be hydrogen poor water because of hydrogen bond energy connecting hydrogen with oxygen to make H2O. It is a logic of mine that natural water, hydrogen poor water, can't be enough to reduce or scavenge active oxygen species, which should have compelled us mankind to develop a procedure with which we can fight against sickness being brought as the result of oxidative damage by active oxygen. In other words, human medicine should be a kind of fiction based and developed on our inevitable intake of natural water or hydrogen poor water. On the contrary, we could easily be free from sickness when we depend on hydrogen rich water which can be enough to scavenge active oxygen species.
Hydrogen Rich Water
It is known that magnesium reacts with water to produce hydrogen gas when it is heated. We confirmed, however, that magnesium produces hydrogen gas even in water with room temperature which could be demonstrated by the Portable Hydrogen Detector developed by ourselves being explained in the following chemical formula.

Active hydrogen in Hydrogen Rich Water binds with active oxygen to produce H2O. Molecular hydrogen in Hydrogen Rich Water can be split to atomic hydrogen by hydrogenase in our body being implied by R.Happe in his paper 'EEE hydrogenases are enzymes that can reversibly split molecular hydrogen. EEE Ni/Fe hydrogenases are among the oldest enzymes ( 3.8 billion years old ), demonstrating early that life forms had developed an effective way to activate molecular hydrogen at ambient temperature and pH.
